Gratitude Is The Best Emotional Self-Care
Going through tough times can feel overwhelming, making it hard to focus on gratitude or even notice the small joys in life. While it might seem unnatural to be thankful during hardships, gratitude is crucial in these moments.
The past few months have been especially hard after losing my mom. I’ve felt like I’m in a fog, with emotions hitting me out of nowhere. After the initial shock and the funeral, grief crept in, leaving me tearful over the smallest reminders.
To cope, I returned to regular self-care, including practicing gratitude affirmations. This daily focus on the blessings in my life has been a powerful tool in navigating grief—one of the best forms of emotional self-care for anyone to try.
Why Is Gratitude Important
Gratitude not only makes us feel happier and deeper joy in our lives but it’s also known to help decrease mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. (1)
This is because it shifts your attention from negative to positive experiences, which reduces stress and fosters a more optimistic outlook on your life and circumstances. If that isn’t enough reason to practice more gratitude, I’m not sure what it is.
Research also shows that regularly practicing gratitude increases life satisfaction and can strengthen your social connections and bonds by making other people feel valued and appreciated.
According to psychology expert Dr. Robert Emmons, gratitude has two steps. First, we recognize the good in our lives, which helps us appreciate what we have. Second, we acknowledge that this goodness often comes from outside ourselves, whether from others, nature, or a higher power. (2)
Powerful Benefits of Gratitude
There are many reasons gratitude is the best attitude you can cultivate, and the best part is that it is easy.
It’s as quick as a smile, as effortless as saying thanks, and as straightforward as texting someone to express how much you appreciate them. Those are some of my favourite ways of expressing gratitude, along with giving small but meaningful gifts, spreading kindness to others and, of course, repeating gratitude affirmations.
Here are some of the most powerful benefits of gratitude (3):
- Improves mental health
- Enhances physical health
- Boosts happiness
- Strengthens relationships
- Improves sleep
- Enhances self-esteem
- Fosters a sense of purpose
What are Gratitude Affirmations?
Gratitude affirmations are short, positive statements that help you focus on thankfulness and lift your mood. While many affirmations start with “I am,” there’s no strict formula—you can craft them in a way that feels right to you.
Affirmations work by replacing negative thoughts with more uplifting ones, promoting better self-esteem and a more positive mindset. Some may dismiss them as “toxic positivity,” but they’re really about shifting your perspective and improving self-talk.
Affirmations aren’t for everyone, and that’s okay. They require effort and consistency to be effective, so if they don’t resonate with you, it’s fine to explore other methods.
