Think of self-care Sundays as a simple but fresh reset you deserve and need to restore your mind, body and soul for the week ahead.
Have a Happy, Healthy Life
Let’s be honest: time often slips away from us, making the concept of self-care seem impractical or even unrealistic, especially given the hype around luxury self-care days or pricey vacations.
I understand. Despite my years as a Social Worker, where I often encouraged my clients to prioritize self-care, I struggled to prioritize it in my own life for the longest time.
Then, severe anxiety surfaced, and I needed another mental health professional to make it clear to me that self-care wasn’t just important but imperative for a happy and healthy life.
A clinical psychologist, K. Crockett, explains that self-care enhances our well-being, can help prevent illness from occurring and improves our ability to handle stress and deal with challenges. (1)
So, just as we have to recharge our phone batteries and fill our gas tanks to drive, we also need to refuel our minds and bodies to function optimally and have more energy for daily life.
What is a Self-Care Sunday?
A self-care Sunday isn’t anything fancy or something you need to prepare for meticulously.
It’s simply a day you prioritize taking care of yourself, so in that case, it could be any day. Sunday seems ideal for most people to refresh and rejuvenate after a long week and get recharged for the new week ahead.
If that’s not the case for you, then pick another day that works; it’s not the particular day that matters. It’s the concept of taking one day a week to relax, destress and take care of yourself.
Focus on practicing easy self-care ideas every Sunday (or whatever day works) until they become second nature.
Signs You Need More Self-Care
In the hustle of daily life, it’s easy to forget about taking care of yourself. If you’re feeling off or not at your best, it might be a sign that you need more self-care.

- Getting easily annoyed or upset.
- Not sleeping well or sleeping too much.
- Physical symptoms like headaches, muscle tension, or frequent illnesses.
- Forgetting to take care of yourself because you’re too busy helping others.

Self-Care Day Tips
There are many benefits of taking care of yourself (see FAQ section below), so ditch the false narrative that self-care is selfish or frivolous because research proves self-care is necessary for your health. (2)
A few tips for self-care:
- Keep it simple: Self-Care Sundays don’t require extensive planning. If your activity does involve products like creams or bath bombs, ensure you have them to avoid disruptions. Or pick up a self-care gift set to make it easy.
- Schedule it in: Block off time every Sunday, even if it’s just 15 minutes. Consistency is key, whether you can dedicate half the day or one hour.
- Embrace saying “No”: Don’t be afraid to decline requests. Learn to say “no” comfortably, and if you struggle in this area, read this powerful People Pleaser post for tips.
- Let people know: If you’re a parent or have a partner or other close relationships that require you on Sundays, let them know your self-care time is essential and a time not to be disturbed.
- Detox from your phone: During self-care time, put your phone away. Set it to “do not disturb” or silent and place it in another room. Better yet, make it a no-social media day for uninterrupted relaxation.

55. Try Some Simple Self-Reflection and Positive Self-Talk.
Our inner critic is harsh, so reflecting and practicing more balanced positive self-talk is a powerful strategy. Identify negative things you often say to yourself (like thinking you’re not good, smart, or talented enough). Then, gather evidence to help challenge those limiting beliefs.
Here are prompts to help guide you:
- List three accomplishments you are proud of.
- Recall a time you helped someone; what did they say?
- Think about a past worry that turned out okay. How did you expect it to go versus how did it actually go?
- Think about positive things people often say about you. List them as strengths. For example, do people say you’re helpful, intelligent, funny, or kind? These are your qualities, and we often don’t notice or give ourselves credit for them.
